Sistem MBBR dianggap sebagai proses biofilm.Proses biofilm konvensional lainnya untuk pengolahan air limbah disebut filter tetesan, kontaktor biologis berputar (RBC) dan filter aerasi biologis (BAF).Proses biofilm secara umum membutuhkan lebih sedikit ruang daripada sistem lumpur aktif karena biomassa lebih terkonsentrasi, dan efisiensi sistem kurang bergantung pada pemisahan lumpur akhir.Kerugian dari proses biofilm lainnya adalah mereka mengalami bioclogging dan penumpukan headloss.

Sistem MBBR tidak memerlukan daur ulang lumpur, seperti halnya sistem lumpur aktif.
